Description

Romance and sexual intimacy are among life's highest joys. How we handle our sexuality is an ultimate challenge, particularly in today's sexualised global culture.Rob Yule looks at a fascinating selection of romantic relationships from throughout Christian history, from Augustine, Abelard and Héloïse, and the Luthers to Billy and Ruth Graham and Pope Saint John Paul II. Illustrating how challenging and far-from-straightforward the relationship of men and women is in real life, he draws many insights for relationships and marriage today.A Terrifying Grace explores the romantic relationships of leading Christians throughout history and how they handled sex and marriage.- What were their relationships and marriages like?- What did they believe or teach about sexuality and marriage?- Did their marriages - or celibate lives - live up to their professed beliefs?- How did they handle the joys, pains, temptations, and responsibilities of their intimate relationships, alongside their public life and witness?Even great Christians have struggled to handle their intimate relationships. We can learn much from them how to live with integrity in today's hypersexualised culture.

I read it over a month, and then started re-reading it straight away, to refresh my memory of the fascinating stories of many well known Christian leaders. The most fascinating to me were Martin Luther, Francis Schaeffer and Derrick Prince, all people who have influenced me in the past. Really interesting to find out how human all these people were, how they made decisions, and had to overcome severe trials to continue in their ministries. Who would have thought that Francis Schaeffer was from a working class background and had a bad temper problem and a Lack of Culture, unlike his wife Edith. Or again that the Puritans had a strong working grasp of marital sexuality, thought it was a very good thing to enjoy the physical comforts of ones spouse, and that in fact it was the later Victorian era that was terribly straight laced and and was dubbed "very Puriantical". Also fascinating was how St Augustine became rather anti sex after his conversion and his influence through his writings is still felt today. Whereas Pope John-Paul II had a really good appreciation of human relations and wrote a book about it, with his much more realistic views. I hope this can become known.Other stand-outs were how bad John Wesley's married was, a real tragedy of errors, but how good were those of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards (American preacher of the Great Awakening) and Billy and Ruth Graham. Many men have had love relationships with women of similar intellect, without necessarily consummating the bond, but I wont say who-read the book. Rob Yule has obviously researched this very well- he has done the work to be an authority on this subject. Highly recommend
