My thoughts: Song-by-song1. Trip the Darkness - 8/10 This was the first Lacuna Coil song I have ever heard, believe it or not. I was in a Gothic metal forum, and I noticed that a link to this song was attached. And upon discovering this album, it piqued my interest. This song is very poetic in a way, without being too wordy. The music behind it sounds more like Neo-classical style metal, kind of like a darker opera in a sense. Lyrically, it was interesting, but musically, I just wasn't too into it. It's okay.2. Against You - 9/10 I listened to this a few times before processing my thoughts. This song captured my attention, and retained it. I love the contrasting vocals between Andrea and Cristina. Andrea's harsh vocals are very powerful, as well as emotionally charged. I loved the musicianship behind this one, and the guitar solo was phenomenal. It packed a punch, and the lyrics are actually quite interesting to me. I'd say this is one of the better songs they've made in the last five years.3. Kill the Light - 7.5/10 I tried to like this song, but for some reason, I just couldn't. It was too repetitive for me, and I just didn't have an interest in this. The lyrics are highly relatable, but that's not really enough. The musicianship isn't terrible, but, it just seems like your typical Alt. metal song. Kudos to Cristina to though. She has a beautiful voice that's showcased here nicely.4. Give Me Something More - 10/10 THIS was the song that made me love this album. Immediately upon hearing it, I had to loop this. This song is beyond amazing. The instruments, the vocals, the pure craft. It really made a good impression on me. I love the lyrics, especially the line, "I cross the line. The walk of shame. I hear the church bells through the acid rain." It's really quite perfection. So much raw emotion. Definitely my favourite track from the album.5. Upsidedown - 3/10 This song was one I initially skipped quickly, but after re-listening, well... my opinion didn't change much. The lyrics are average for me, and to me, it seemed rather repetitive. It also didn't have any appeal to me. Musically, it wasn't that interesting. C'mon Marco and Cristiano! Lyrically, it was... eh. There are way better tracks on the album, and this one to me, just seemed like a filler.6. End of Time - 5/10 Now, I'm not a huge fan of ballads/slow songs/dramatic-esque opera songs. So, this wasn't really something I thought I'd take interest in. But, however, I do appreciate LC's attempt to create a song that carries itself, and distances itself from the traditional 'Goth metal routine' type of material. They didn't do too bad, either. Cristina's vocals are actually really beautiful on this one, but still, it wasn't something I was too into in the end.7. I Don't Believe in Tomorrow - 10/10 I do believe in tomorrow if songs like this one keep being made. The guitars, the drums, everything musically was absolutely incredible. I loved this song, and Andrea's vocals were just out of this world. He once again, like he did in "Give Me Something More", delivers a powerful punch. I especially love the part towards the end where Cristina chants "I avenge you." despite most arguing that it's a repetitive part. Another potent and energetic masterpiece.8. Intoxicated - 8/10 This song seemed too slow for my taste at first, but I listened to it again, and what do you know. I was wrong. This song is amazing. The type of Goth metal that serves itself in a righteous way. The lyrics are really emotional, and they make me relive my earlier teenage years. I enjoyed this song both musically and lyrically. The guitars were on point. This song features less of Andrea and more Cristina, but that's alright. It was quite intoxicating. See what I did there? Nevermind. Anyways, the song was good.9. The Army Inside - 8/10 This song sent my mind to many places. I thought immediately of the movie Pearl Harbor for some reason, and how well this would have fit in there, had it existed. This isn't your typical song about life experiences, rather a little darker. The themes of loss and war are expressed in detail. I liked this song. The instrumental was okay, not superb, but okay.10. Losing My Religion - 4/10 I might get flack for this, but I am just not a REM fan. Maybe that's because I'm "a stupid young late 90's baby", but, regardless, this wasn't appealing in the least. I respect that they have the right to make any covers they wish, and for the simple fact of it being a cover, it wasn't a bad one, but, I'll pass.11. Fire - 3/10 This was the track that I hated the most on the album. Insanely repetitive, not very lyrically appealing, and I cringed several times with Andrea's word choices in this song. This song seemed like this was the one they were going to release commercially, and be their biggest mainstream hit. It was seriously a travesty. But, I figured -- this was normal. They were bound to crash the plane sometime. Anyways, this song was an evil force to be reckoned with.12. My Spirit - 6/10 And we come to a close with the adrenaline rush. They end with what turns out to be the most emotional track on the album. You can hear Cristina croon, "My spirit is free. I'm coming home." There's a part in the song that seems to be an Italian prayer or sorts, so, if you don't know Italian, Google Translate best be your guidance system. I thought it worked well, and as a whole, the song was beautiful. It's actually one of the few slower songs that I do enjoy.Overall thoughts: I've only been a Lacuna Coil fan for about two years now, but, this album is the best LC album to date. All of their previous album have nothing on this album. In a Reverie was good, but this proved to be a bit better. And we won't talk about their newest train wreck. Broken Crown Halo, you're staying. I love this band, and I am excited for what the future holds.
