Dark of the Gods (2009) is an omnibus edition of the Kencyrath series. It contains God Stalk, Bones and Dark of the Moon.The Three People -- Arrin-ken, Kendar, and Highborn -- had been united by the Three-Faced God to resist -- and hopefully drive away -- the Perimal Darkling. The Kencyrath had been fighting against the Outsider for thirty thousand years. But three millennia ago, Ganth Grey Lord had turned against their God and joined with the Primal Darkling for the gift of immortality.Jamethiel Talissen is a Kencyr fleeing from her father's household. She has brought her father's ring and broken sword for Tori. Jame also has a nice set of retractable claws.Torisen is Jame's twin brother. Since leaving his father's hold, he has trained as a randon and fought with the Southern Host. Tori has since searched the ruined hold of his father, but couldn't find the ring and sword.God Stalk (1982) is the first fantasy novel in this series. Jame came out of the Haunted Lands with a bitten arm and dead pursuers. She comes to the open gates of Tai-Tastison on the Night of the Dead Gods and first believes the city to be abandoned. Then she is attacked by some of the Dead Gods.Penari is the most famous thief in Tai-Tastison. On the Night of the Dead Gods, he is attacked by two thugs, but is rescued by Jame. When she introduces herself, Penari misunderstands and thinks she is a boy named Talisman.Tubain is the owner of the Res aB'tyrr Inn. He is a good host, but anything unusual causes him to flee to the cellars. Jame's entrance into the inn almost sends him down to check his inventory, but her immediate collapse stirs his hostly habits.Cleppetty -- the Widow Cleppetania -- is cook and housekeeper of the Res aB'tyrr Inn. She is an adept at small household magics. She helps nurse Jame back to health and soon becomes a mentor and friend.Marplet sen Tenko is the keeper of the Skyrrman Inn. He has started a private war against the Res aB'tyrr Inn. Since Marplet has the ear of Harr sen Tenko of the Five, Tubain and his staff are afraid to strike back against him for the harassing incidents.Theocandi is the Sirdan -- Guildmaster -- of the Thieves' Guild. He is Penari's younger brother. Theocandi's apprentice is Bane, a strange man with unusual skills.Dally is an apprentice thief who becomes her friend. He is the younger half-brother of Men-dalis, rival of Theocandi for the position of the Thieves' Guild Sirdan. Other apprentice thieves soon follow Dally into Jame's clique.In this story, Penari offers Jame a position as his apprentice. After recovering from her loss of sleep and her haunt-wound, Jame belatedly tracks down Penari in his home within the Maze. The residents of Tai-Tastison are dedicated to mazes, but Pernari's Maze is so confusing that the architect was lost within it and his body never recovered.Jame had delayed so long because the Kencyr are inherently honest. They only speak the truth and generally do not steal. But the Three-Faced God has given her permission to join the Guild through the mouth of Ishtier, his priest in Tai-Tastison.As Pernari's apprentice, Jame is the subject of anger and envy. Many younger thieves had tried to become his apprentice, but he refused all offers. Now she will learn all his secrets and never share them with anybody else.One day Jame rescues a feline from a bag at the bottom of the river. After reaching the shore, she has a confrontation with the servant who had tossed the weighted bag into the water. Jame is told that the ounce cub is blind and that she can have him, but don't expect the servant to confirm her claim. She names the cat-like animal Jorin."Bones" (1984) is a short story in this series.Patches is a thief in Tai-Tastigon. She is a friend of Jame, but keeps accepting dares from the other thief apprentices.Penari is a master thief. He refuses to take other apprentices, but accepts Jame.Monster is a very large python. He is afraid of vhors.In this story, Patches is the lookout for Jame. She is wondering what has kept her. It is nearly dawn.Jame is working on the lock within a jewel case. This case has a disincentive: a razor sharp trap. She has been working on the lock for hours. Her arms are tired.Then she hears a click. Fortunately, it is the lock instead of the trap. She views the two jewels inside the case. One is a magnificent sapphire, but the other is only a zircon.Jame turns the sapphire upside down and takes the zircon. As she is leaving the building, an earthquake strikes. The quake rouses the guard and he attacks Jame.After leaving the scene, Jame gives Patches the zircon. She also chides Patches for accepting another dare. Then she goes back to Penari's Maze.Dark of the Moon (1985) is the second fantasy novel in this series. Three years ago, Torisen announced his ancestry and, despite the lack of his father's ring and sword, became the Highlord of the Kencyr.Burr is a Kendar who was assigned to take care of Tori by Ardeth, one of the Kencyrath Council. When Tori became the Highlord, Burr stayed with him. Although Tori thinks of him as Ardeth's spy, Burr has long since been bound to the Highlord.Marcarn is a Kendar who has become Jame's retainer. Seven feet tall, Marc is a formidable warrior. But he keeps getting hit in the head.Jorin is a young ounce, a cat-like creature. He was born blind and has only partial use of his other senses. Jame sometimes is able to mindlink with Jorin, but the ounce can always see through her eyes.In this story, Jame, Marc and Jorin head for the Blue Pass to cross the Ebonbane. They encounter wyrsan, a shaper, an Arrin-ken, and the Dream-Weaver herself before they even reach the pass. On the other side, they descend to the town of Peshtar.They find the town remarkably crowded. The brigands have come down from the mountain to spend their loot. The town only lets one band at a time into the town to reduce the brawling.Jame is eager to replace her boot, which had been shredded by a wyrsan kit. Since the incidence, she has been wearing one of Marc's mittens on her foot. After obtaining her new boots, they go into a tavern for food and drink.Unfortunately, Black Band brigands are enjoying themselves in the tavern. One of the brigands is Bortis, who had lost both eyes because of Jame. In the ensuing fight, the townsmen -- with some help from Jame, Marc and Jorin -- eject the brigands from the town. Everyone celebrates until Jame tells them why Bortis wants her.Meanwhile, Tori has a group of young Kencyr traveling with him. He is trying to make himself familiar to the youngsters before they become set in their ways. After sending them to bed, Tori and Burr ride off to see Kithorn, where the Merikit had slaughtered a Highborn household.There Tori finds destruction, but no bones. The young Highborn have been sneaking off to retrieve the bones for decades. It is a rite of passage for the local youths.Then the Merikit enter the grounds. While escaping, Tori falls into a cellar and finds the bones of a young girl. Burr helps him gather them and then both escape over the parapet and down a tree.These stories starts off slow and mysterious, but quickly gain momentum. The mystery never fades, but rather becomes even stronger. More is revealed, but much is still left unexplained.
